AIG Women's Senior Foursomes East Munster Finals

Tipperary's team played the AIG Women's Senior Foursomes East Munster Semi Final in Tipperary GC on home ground on  Sunday the 12th July, Tipperary played Fota Island in the first round. A massive battle, but the team came through to get into the Final.. Kinsale Golf Club played against Douglas GC on the same morning, and Douglas GC emerged the next competition for the Tipperary women.

The sun was harsh, there were women with iced towels going over their heads trying to keep the head cool, and it definitely worked.  There was some spectacular golf played, one example on the 18th, with Douglas GC after hitting their second shot out the back of the green, and Aoife Lowry hitting out of the left hand side, left Mary Whelan with a fine look in from 110m out. As the supporters looked on, the ball bounced on the front of the 18th green, rolled out up the left hand side of the green, trickled along the fringe, then fell in towards the pin, and potted into the hole to win their match - epic,

Match 3 came to the wire, the women were 3 up after 15, but momentum went Douglas GC way, where Douglas won 16, 17 and suddenly there was drama on the 18th. Douglas hit a superb drive, with a second shot just being too optimistic, it leaked into the left hand bunker in a challenging spot. Douglas golfers assessed and decided, a chip out the side was the way to go. They slotted the ball onto the fringe, leaving them with putter territory.  Tipperary women were out the back of the green now, second shot just a bit too enthusiastic, and landed over the back. Yvonne's turn, she chipped up to 10 feet or so of the pin. Douglas putted onto the green but again, enthusiasm got the better of the moment, and the putt went a good 12 ft past the pin. Douglas still up, had a similar putt earlier that morning, sunk the putt and with it sunk the Tipperary GC hopes for a few moments. It didn't take long, Marian stepped up, pressure was on, she had a beautiful roll of a putt but it just didn't fall and suddenly, they were all square on the 18th, nothing for it, but down 19.

Steely determination and grit, (the supporters were more nervous than the golfers at this stage), but down the first they went.  All said and done the Tipperary women (Marian) managed a great chip on from the back of the green and it hit the pin, stopping the ball about 6 feet from the hole. Douglas GC chipped, but it didn't work like Tipp's. Ultimately Yvonne made the final putt and the game was over. Tipperary Golf Club emerged victorious and the AIG Women's Senior Foursomes Munster East 2026 pennant resides at Tipperary Golf Club. The team go on to play in the All-Ireland series in Shandon Park Golf Club, Belfast in a few weeks.
