Weekly News - Historical

25th January 2026

Tipperary Golf Club celebrates it's 130 Year Anniversary:

Our Captain Daniel Connery & Lady Captain Deirdre Hayes outlined that the first lady to hit a golf ball, up in the hills of Tipperary was Mrs Moore, from Mooresfort in Lattin, and that happened just before Christmas in 1895.

The 25th January 1896, the record show's Tipperary Golf Club was officially launched. Captain TE Willington was the first to captain the club & they golfed in the Hills of Tipperary until around 1916, when it moved to Scallagheen, then by mid 1920's moved to Garranacanty, and into Carrog for a while, moved into Rathanny into 1939 as a 9-hole course.  In 1993 the club moved from being 9 holes to 18 holes, and the journey has just grown from there.

We have had a number of great golfers to hail from the club, including none other than the great Arthur Pearse & Pat Murray, Marian Riordan & Sarah Crowe, as well as Donnacha Cleary to reach Ireland golfer status, just to mention a few.

Thanks to all of our members and locals, we're still going strong.

Men's Club Notes:

We have just endured a week of very wet weather which caused us to lose out on a whole week of fixtures. Most notably, our annual Captains Drive In (scheduled for Sunday 25th January) was deferred until a later date. We will advertise well in advance of the new date. With the immediate forecast looking unsettled, we hope for an easing in the rainfall so that the course can drain successfully without being compounded by further rain.

Men's Spring League:

Following a high participation in the first week of the competition, the teams are all still competitive. As it is being played over five rounds of nine holes, any teams that didn’t have the greatest of starts can still make the final six qualifiers as all teams can falter along the way. Don’t forget that there is an individual prize for each category during the qualifying rounds. The final will be played on Sunday 1st of March (weather permitting) where qualifying scores won’t carry over.

Winter Sweeps:

We hopefully will be able to continue with our usual competitions this week, the scores recently have been very high, with players shooting scores very close to level par in top two categories. Players are deducted shots for various wins and the perseverance of some players has paid off, when they continued in a good vein of form.

Upcoming events:

Our Open team event on St. Brigids bank holiday Monday, February 2nd is almost fully booked up. There is still some availability for afternoon slots. This champagne scramble with two scores to count proved very popular on New Years Day, so hopefully we get a good day for it.

18th January 2026

Upcoming TGC Fixtures

Captains Drive In. This big event takes place on Sunday next 25th of January, hopefully the weather will hold, and we can have all 18 holes in play. The competition on the day is a nine-hole full Scramble (front nine and back nine). If you would like to play, please put your name on Sunday's timesheet (anywhere) and the games committee will arrange teams on Saturday evening which will be available to see when you arrive. Shotgun start at 12 noon, so be there in plenty of time to wish the Captains well and meet your team. Best wishes to Deirdre, Daniel and Sean on their year ahead.

Open Team of 3 on February 2nd (Bank Holiday): The timesheet is open for this popular team event; the timesheet is filling fast. Played over 15 holes (weather permitting) this event always proves popular, open to visitors also.

Men's Club Notes:

Thankfully, we had a full week of competitions without interruption this week.

The Spring League is going well with nineteen teams, scores are coming in thick and fast with the bar being set very high for nine holes, the best score in to date is 25 points from Noel Hennessy. The top six teams play off on Sunday 1st of March, (scores don’t carry through), so get your five rounds played as soon as possible. There is an individual prize for the qualifying stage in each category, so if your team is struggling, there is still something to play for.

Upcoming fixtures

Our next big event in the club is the annual Captains Drive In on Sunday 25th of January, the teams on the day will be chosen on the morning of the Drive in, so come early and allow time to get sorted. Run in similar fashion to the Club Day scramble on December 28th, there will be a nine hole competition spread over both the front nine and back nine. Always an enjoyable day and a big occasion for our Captains Daniel, Deirdre and Sean.

Our sweeps continue as normal with the Senior men having their day on Thursday mornings. If you are over 59 and would like to join in the Seniors on Thursdays, just show up before 10.30 and you will be assigned to a team and a great few hours on the golf course and in the clubhouse afterwards.

Course Updates:

Eddie and his team have just completed the upgrading of the greenside bunker on the eighteenth last week. This adds to the challenge of the hole as well as creating a greater contour on the green. The course will hopefully receive a current rating this year, which will reflect all the improvements we have seen in recent times. Work on bunkers and tee boxes have really enhanced the course and should be seen as significant when the rating is completed.

4th January 2026

The Christmas season has passed and proved to be a busy and successful two weeks. Highlights were the Club scramble on Sunday 28th and the champagne scramble on New year Day. It was great to see the crowds out and the timesheet was extremely busy each day over the holiday period. We have just entered a cold snap but we hope to be open later in the week.
Spring League:
Don’t forget to enter the Spring League, deadline is Sunday afternoon 11th January with the draw being made at 4pm that day and teams being published shortly afterwards on the master scoreboard. These leagues always generate a lot of excitement and banter as the scores come in.

Course Information.
It was great to see the 12th , 13th and 14th holes open during the holidays, the full challenge of Tipperary Golf Course is best illustrated by these holes. We are hoping to continue to vary the course holes in the next few weeks to help with the large traffic the course is experiencing. The rough has been cut recently and has further enhanced the quality of the course. It is great to see the winter colours of the various evergreens on the course and of course the wildlife of squirrels and water hens on the 4th hole. The environmentally friendly approach used by the greenkeepers is reaping its rewards in terms of the wildlife and plant species on view.

Results:
A lot of great golf was played over the last week, none more so than Kilfinane's, Bernard O Shaughnessy with the fantastic score of 34 points over 13 holes. Bernard has been playing great golf over the last few months, he will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming year. A great score too from Donal Noonan, going around 13 holes in one under par.
Don’t forget that you can play both Winter Sweeps and Spring Leagues at the same time from Monday 12th of January.
The first sweep of 2026 saw a big win for young Jack Marnane who had a great score of 31 points over 12 holes. Well done Jack, a just reward for one of the most dedicated golfers in the club.

Our members are to be complimented on the care they take on the course, especially the greens. The condition of the course later in the year is dependent on how we look after it during the spring and winter months.

Finally, we wish all of our members, staff and sponsors a happy New Year and thatTipperary Golf Club continues to provide enjoyment for all those who use the facility.

It was the week before Christmas week and the golf club was busy! There were Christmas lunches, Christmas Prizes presentation night for the ladies Club and the weather wreaked havoc with our opportunities to golf. But indoors was warm and welcoming.

Our Senior Men didn't get out for golf either on Thursday due to the rain, but our gentlemen were more than happy to sit and have their weekly catch up in the clubhouse, cosy and in the form for devilment. Like all of us, they are looking forward to brighter days out on the course.
