Summer Series Tuesday 28th April

The weather was great on Tuesday last and a fine crowd of 109 players turned out including 23 visitors to play a course that was in excellent condition. Sponsored by Aherlow's Quinn Perry Construction, also a club member together with our main sponsor Stargas, the Series is really taking off.

Corkman, Jim Noonan is really hitting form at the moment and had the day's best score of 40 points to narrowly defeat another man in form, Doon's David Stapleton in a countback. Conciliation for David in the fact that his score is very likely to qualify him as a leading runner up in the Grand Final on September 11th.

Category one was won by local man James Doocey in the twilight hours as the last man in, narrowly beating another Doon man, Michael P Ryan into second. A strong front nine of level par saw James prevail. Category 2 saw 3 players tied on 36 points with Galbally's Marcus Browne holing out from Peter Murphy, Newcastlewest GC and Bansha's Michael O'Brien. Peter would however have the conciliation of taking the Visitors prize of a box of PROV1s home . Another visitor, Kevin Buckley Castletroy GC, and of the Fire Brigade outing, took the category 4 prize. When contacted afterwards, Kevin kindly donated his winning voucher to the Junior section of the club. A very kind gesture from someone who has only recently taken up golf and was winning for the first time.

Senior Golf: Thursday 30th April

Played on a very wet day, 28 brave souls ventured out to play in our weekly seniors. As the last Thursday is always a full scramble, the scoring was very good. Only a half a point separated the top two teams. If you are 59 years young and a member of the club, why not come along on a Thursday morning at 9.30 and you will be greeted by the organising table and set up with a group for a very enjoyable few hours both on the course and in the clubhouse afterwards.

Result this week:

1st Place: Michael Quirke, Tom Cosgrove, Noel McGuire and Tom O'Dea 39 nett

2nd Place : Seamus Carabine, Gerry Meade, Denis McGrath and Gerry Kelly.

Summer Series Saturday 2nd May

Last Saturday turned out very wet in the morning and early afternoon, but this didn’t deter the 96 players including 13 visitors from enjoying the course and it certainly didn’t interfere with Tipperary Town's Peter Ryan from having a great round of 7 over par. Playing some excellent golf, Peter finished strong on the back nine to clear the field in style. This will safely see the winner through to the Grand Final in September 11th. Top category winner, Aherlow's, Niall O'Shea also finished very strong and is having a great spell of form. Niall has now entered the grand final standing in the winners section and the runners up section. In the second category, Tipperary towns Orrin Jones is also showing form with a great score of 41 points which ensure he will have to timetable in the Grand Final into his plans. In the final Category, Bansha man Willie Hayes reminded everyone that he is always a threat in competitions. A tidy round of 37 points was the clear winner of this category from Brian Deegan.

As we have a limited timesheet on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, we are running the Tuesday Summer Series over 2 days, which should help people who wouldn’t normally get a chance to play midweek an opportunity to get an extra crack at qualifying. The weekly Gross winner was local man, Adam Long with a fine round of two over par. Adam will be playing a number of important matches in the club senior matchplay in the next few weeks so this augers well for his current form.

Out daily visitors prize of a box of 12 PROV1s went to Dungarvan Golf Club this time to Craig Susdorf in a countback from Castletroy Golf Clubs Eoin Merrigan.

T F Ryan Qualifiers Sunday May 3rd.

A fine turn out of 87 players on Sunday even with the clash with the Limerick/Clare hurling game. Scores were consistently high with only two players scoring level 72's getting through to the 16 player knockout stages. Top score of the day was local man, Ben Carey with a standout score of 65 nett. Former Tipp Hurler Clonoulty's Joe Hayes followed him home in second on 68 nett. Kilshane's Tommy Crowe is showing the benefits of having a bit more time to play golf in his retirement by shooting an excellent score of 69 nett. The days best gross was won by Tipperary Town's, Sean Cummins who seems to be the most consistent golfer in the club with the frequency of his wins. This event was our second stroke competition but the first off blue tees which makes all the scores more commendable.

We had great turnout on Tuesday with 109 entries, played in dry but breezy conditions, scoring was excellent, Category 1 was extremely tight with two players having exactly the same score and needing to go to the front nine holes to separate them, Ballylanders man, Dylan Noonan finally came out on top from Philip Ryan to claim the prize. Bansha man Paddy Crowe came out on top in the second category also in a count-back from Conor Carroll and Colm Noonan (who almost made it a father and son double on the day). Kilfinane's, Pa McGrath won again for the second week running with a fine score of 38pts in a count-back from four players Eddie Madden, Alex Ryan, James Collins and Shane Leonard. The most popular win of the day was in category 4 where proud Kerry man, Cahersiveen's, Tom H O'Connor now residing in Hospital Co. Limerick came through with flying colours to claim the title. Well done Tom, a great supporter of every event in the club.

To Cap a successful week, Tom also was on the podium in the seniors the following Thursday!

Our winning visitor is no stranger to the club, winning for the second time in as many weeks, our visitors prize of a box of 12 PROV1s went to Liam Cleary of Thurles Golf Club. 19th April 2026

Our Tuesday Singles kindly sponsored by The Vale Star, compliments of club member, Jerry Morrissey, was held in fine weather early in the day with the evening turning wet. We had a good turnout of 77 players who obviously had no petrol/diesel worries in travelling!

Pride of place goes to Curraghpoor's Donnacha Cleary, who had a brilliant round of six under par with the highlight being an eagle on the challenging sixth hole. Great to see Donnacha playing well again and the best of luck in the coming year. Aherlow's Peter Leonard played a really nice, consistent round of golf to secure the second division. Biggest score of the day went to Kilfinane man, Pa McGrath with a huge total of 45 points beating a number of close competitors in Clare's James Collins and fellow Kilfinane man Pat Sheehy. This category is a hard-fought win, any winner needs to be on top of their game to come out on top. Another Kilfinane man, Bernard O Shaughnessy can't be kept out of the winner's enclosure lately, Bernard had a fine round of 40 points to lead the field home.

Next Tuesday sees the start of our Summer Series, which has been a huge success for the club. It runs every Tuesday and Saturday from here on.

We have now entered the round-robin phase of our Senior Matchplay. 20 players entered, where eight of those players played off to reach the last 16. Four great matches were held with each being very competitive. The winners were Niall O'Shea, Ted Lowry, Philip Ryan and Thomas Crosse. All the fixtures are on Master Scoreboard.

Club Matchplay:

Members have until Sunday 26th of April to enter this year's Major competition.

The draw is being held on Sunday evening. As this is a great competition, a large entry is expected, thanks to our sponsors, James and Lorla Collins for their continued support.

Pierce Purcell:

Close neighbours, Tipperary GC and Co. Tipperary GC battled it out on Saturday 18th of April. Tipperary managers, Dan McKenna and Pat Creamer selected a very experienced team from a large panel. It’s great to see an upsurge in interest in club team participation. In good weather conditions together with a course in fantastic condition, the two teams had a great battle. Limericks Noel Hennessy and Cullen native, Denis O Sullivan went out first and had a comprehensive victory. The second match featured Limerick men Simon Earlie and Mike McCarthy. This was a great match and cometh the hour, cometh the man, Simon had a fifteen-foot putt to win the match on the eighteenth green. This was duly sunk and capped a great win for Tipperary Golf Club. The remaining pairs of Gerard Ryan and Pat Sheehy, Patrick Kennedy and Bernard Murphy all won their matches to set up a second-round fixture with Tramore Golf Club before May 9th.

Moloney Foursomes : Sponsored by ITW Polymers (Denis Ryan )

On Saturday and Sunday last we held a two-day qualifier for the Moloney Foursomes. 75 pairs played over the two days with the course playing very challenging with quick greens and tough pin placements. This didn’t deter the weekend winners of Patrick Ryan G and his brother Philip of Murroe, shooting a great score of 67 nett. Close on their heels were Cappamore's Dan McKenna (who had a busy day as the Pierce Purcell manager) and new member Craig Toomey who were one shot behind. 16 pairs go through to the knockout stages which is on Master Scoreboard to view. This concludes a three-week period of team events, and judging by the high level of participation, having this format after an absence of a number of years can be viewed as a success.

1st Place : Patrick Ryan/Philip Ryan 67 nett

2nd Place : Dan McKenna/ Craig Toomey 68 nett

On a day of mainly dry but blustery conditions we had a great turnout of 41 teams including 28 visitors, playing in the popular format. Scoring was excellent, with the birdies in plentiful supply. The holes against the wind proved to be decisive as par was always going to be a great score. The greens are now rolling close to perfection, thanks to Eddie Ryan and his greenkeeping staff. We are truly spoiled with the high standard of the course, even at this early stage of the year. Our winning team was led by Club Secretary, Richard Ryan with James Hayes and Aherlow's Patrick Hennessy combining to get nine birdies to claim the title in a countback from a team containing one of our great sponsors Liam Murphy, his brother Martin, who got the all important birdie on the first together with George Fahey who is in great form recently. With a great turnout of visitors, it's not surprising that these teams were competitive. Only one shot outside winning the full competition were a group of players from Lismore Golf Club. Another large turn out of senior men this week, with 14 teams compromising of 56 players with a few new additions playing for the first time. It was another day of great scoring in fine weather, where the winning teams scoring average was over 3 points per score! The 2nd and 3rd scores would normally be good enough to win every other week, so its getting tougher to win senior golf as the numbers increase and as players seem to produce their best golf in a team event. Senior golf each Thursday at 9.30, new members are always welcome.

A great turn out at the weekend saw 65 pairs go out in this prestigious competition to make the final 16 knockout places. Even though we had a weather warning on Saturday, 62 pairs braved the elements and indeed the two highest scores of the weekend came on Saturday despite the difficult conditions. Top score was that father and son combination again of Brian and Eamon Kelly who succeeded in a count-back over Denis McGrath and Fergal Lonergan. Both teams were very consistent in their scoring, where the winners played steady all the way through. The runners up were boosted by two birdies from Denis. Not to be out done, Fergal produced a vital birdie on the 17th hole to give the team a huge boost. The team event proved very enjoyable for players and it is hoped that a renewed interest in playing for the club teams will be a positive outcome. Our first team out this year is the Purcell team who play County Tipperary GC before 19th of April. Best of luck to their manger Dan McKenna in this fixture.

Spring League Final: Sunday 22nd March 2026

We started our Spring League on January 12th where we had 114 players in 19 teams of six. This years competition couldn’t have been tighter, where six teams qualified for the nine hole playoff. Until seven o clock the previous night the lineup was in doubt. The last placed team to qualify were Team ‘S’ and were the underdogs in most people’s books! This made no difference to James Collins and his men as they came home convincing winners by two shots and the team in second led by Sean Cummins held on to the second spot, thanks to the last card in from Billy O Reilly.

This competition has been a great success and has generated a lot of banter over the last few months. Next year’s Winter league will commence next November, so hopefully

anyone who missed out this time will get in on the next league. A spring league will follow again in January 2027.

Winners: Team ‘S’ – Martin Ryan, 15, Nicholas Cooke 20, Eugene O'Sullivan 18,

Pat Dawson, James Collins 21 and Joey O'Dwyer 19 - Total 78

Runners Up- Team ‘N’ Sean Cummins 17, Eric O'Connor 17, Billy O'Reilly 20,

Pat Sheehy 21 and Ignatius Walsh 18. - Total 76

Individual Winners :

Category 1 : Michael P Ryan, Category 2 : Sean Jackson, Category 3 : Maurice Power

and Category 4 : Paddy Mulcahy

Open Singles – Saturday 21st/Sunday 22nd March.

We were back to 18 holes last weekend with the bunkers in play with the ball being dropped in the rough. This made things more difficult for most except our winners who displayed tremendous talent. Top of the pile was Galbally man, Joe McGrath with a huge score of 42 points which included two birdies on the front nine. Pat Flanagan from Waterford, similarly had a great round with three birdies on the front nine. Birdies were the order of the day for Murroe's Patrick Ryan who had six of them to win Category 1. Aherlow was represented again by Patrick Kennedy who also had a crucial birdie on the 17th to sweep past the opposition in Category 2. Jack O'Halloran is keeping up the family tradition of success in golf with another crucial birdie on the 18th hole. Timmy Walsh from Ballylanders got the job done in Category 4 with a score to match the days best, to show that he is still a golfer of note.

Upcoming Fixtures:

Our weekend competition will hopefully be counting as we had drop in the rough only last weekend with the bunkers in play. Great credit to Eddie Ryan and his team for the fantastic condition of the course. If the weather holds out, we should be on schedule for the coming weekend.

Results:

Again we held all our competitions this week except for the Seniors on Thursday, this just happened to be the worst day of the week for the second week in a row, hopefully next Thursday will be a kinder to this large group of players.

On Tuesday we had nice weather and a fine turnout of 56 players in our 12-hole sweep. In category 1, Conor Carroll from Ferbane, County Offaly played super golf with the day's best gross score to hold off all competition to secure the top title on the day. Cappamore's, Ignatius Walsh shot a similar score to secure the category 2 prize, while Pallasgreen man Paddy Mulcahy won the category 3 title on top of the Team of Three he won on St. Brigids Day together with his son. Our next Tuesday competition will be an 18-hole Open Singles on March 24th as the Captains Drive In takes place on St. Patrick's Day.

Our weekend Open Singles was held in good weather on Saturday with less favourable conditions on Sunday. Great credit to Greenkeeper Eddie Ryan and his team having the course in such an advanced condition for this time of year. The 18 holes are in play every day from now on, with the bunkers in play. With 130 members and 9 visitors over the two days, scoring was very competitive. On Saturday the score of the day was provided by Annacarthy man Kieran Aherne, who is alphabetically the first name we all see when looking at club records, but this time Kieran was first on the list because of his fine score on Saturday of 37 points. This score was actually eclipsed on Sunday by Limerick man Shane Moloney with a great score of 38 points.. Shane and his father-in-law and playing partner, Eamon Mulcahy have been in great form this winter, with a number of prizes in the bag. The score of the week would have to be Seamus O'Hallorans four under par on Sunday to secure the top spot in category 1. Well done Seamus, as a great supporter of all competitions in the club, it was well deserved. Another fine score from Bansha man, Paddy Crowe secured the category 2 prize, Paddy was following up on a team win earlier in the year, so it looks like a good year is in store from this multiple major winner. Another golfer having a great winter, Doons David Stapleton was also winning his second prize of the winter with a fine score of 34 points. In category four, there was a return to form of another Bansha man, Willie Hayes with a tidy sore of 33 points. This is a very competitive category with a dozen or so players within a shot or two, so well done to Willie in securing the win. Our visitors prize on the day went to Abbeyleix Golf Club, where Eoin Phelan made the journey worthwhile with a close win over Newcastlewest's Jimmy O Connell.

Upcoming Fixtures:

As we go to print, a big crowd is on the timesheet for Tuesdays Captains Drive In.

Next Sunday sees the playoff final of the very popular Spring League. The final round for qualifying is this Saturday, and with the last few spaces in the final still to be decided, the timesheet will be filled in on Saturday evening to give the qualifiers their tee time. Prizes will be presented on Sunday evening at 5pm approximately in the clubhouse.

Our weekend Open Singles will be over 18 holes once again this weekend.

On Easter Monday 6th of April , we are holding an Open Team Event where the timesheet is open for booking for members and visitors. The month of April sees the qualifying stages for the Moloney Foursomes (sponsor Denis Ryan) and the Murray Fourball (sponsored by the McCormack Family). The Masters weekend (sponsored by Vincent Gilligan) coincides with the first major of the year in Augusta, where the top 20 players will be paired with a leading professional after the 3rd round, for the honour of putting on the Green Jacket.

Summer Series:

This year sees the third running of this very successful competition. There will be a few changes to this year's format, but the majority of the structure will remain the same. More details will follow. The first day of the summer series is Tuesday 21st of April and every Saturday and Tuesday from there on, where competition days allow.

Clubhouse and Course Update:

The newly renovated extended kitchen is up and running, just in time for the large numbers who dined on Mother's Day, so well done to all concerned. The opening hours of the clubhouse will be changing soon as the clocks change on Sunday 29th of March. The great work on the course lately has seen the greens aerated and sanded so the coming weeks will see them in top condition. Members are glad to be back to the old timesheet format of three balls and four balls, where the groupings were temporarily disrupted. As the course is extremely busy, we hope that everyone takes good care of it as a lot of sacrifices were made by all over the winter to protect it.

8th March 2026

As the weather has continued to improve, we almost had a full week of fixtures, except for Thursday when the heavens opened early that morning and continued to rain until late afternoon. Our Seniors will hopefully get to play next Thursday where the starting time is now nine thirty for the remainder of the year until late autumn. As the course has dried out well recently, the Thursday programme will be extended to beyond the ten holes which has been the norm recently.

On Tuesday last we had 65 players in our Sweep where Tipperary towns Eddie Madden made most of a recent sun break to win Category 1 with a fine score of 26 points over 12 holes. Another player just back from warmer climates, Bernard Tobin from Bansha, collected the Category 2 prize while Corks finest, Eddie Fitzgerald had the days best score of 27 points in Category 3. All three players are regulars in the Seniors, so the younger players were left in the shade on the day.

At the weekend we had another great turn out of 160 players for our 15-hole sweep. Next weekend sees the start of 18-hole competitions. Top of the Saturday's scorers was Hospitals, Jimmy O Neill, who returned to form with a fine score of 37 points. Aherlow's, Shane Leonard was Sunday's top scorer with 34 points, which was closely contested with Eddie Fitzgerald and Tom O Donnell. In Category 1, we had another Aherlow man, Niall O Shea on top with a brilliant round of two under par gross to show that the younger members are continuing to improve. In Category two, Limericks Christy Devine showed his class with a fine score of 33 points, the birdies are flowing so far this year for Christy so a great year is in store if the current form is maintained. Category 3 went to Golden/Kilfeakle as Philly Keaty had a fine score of 34 points. Category 4 was kept in the same parish as Goldens Tom O Donnell claimed his second win of the Spring with another fine score. As we now move to more favourable weather, our competitions will run over the full 18 holes or less on occasions, the same conditions will apply to winning scores until counting competitions resume, that is reductions will apply for prior wins.

Upcoming Fixtures

We commence our Open Singles from next Saturday 14th of March where all visitors are welcome. There is a lot of pressure on the timesheet, so try to book well in advance, call Darragh in the pro-shop for details.
On Saint Patrick's Day we have our annual Captains Drive In, at 12 noon. The timesheet is open so put your name down and arrive early to meet your team and cheer on Deirdre, Daniel and Sean as they hit their tee shots to symbolically start the years golf. If you haven’t paid your annual subscription and insurance (€26) please do so as soon as possible. This can be done in person or over the phone. Later on we also have an Open Team of Three on Easter Bank Holiday 6th April. The time sheet is open for booking.

Clubhouse Updates:

The major change in the clubhouse of extending the kitchen into the committee room will be completed this week, with the official opening on Thursday next, 12th of March. Best of luck to O'Rawe Catering in the new venture which will hopefully help bring the club into a new era of hospitality.

Spring League:

We are now in the final stages of the above competition, with a number of teams tightly contesting the six qualifying spots for the final on Sunday 22nd of March. When the final date for qualifying is reached, (21st March ) the finalists look in doubt until the last scores are counted. The eagerly awaited last few results will decide all. Finally, please give consideration to participating in our club teams this year, the lists are on the notice board in the locker room.

1st March 2026

The weather improved this week with the course open everyday except Thursday, so unfortunately the Seniors lost out to very heavy rain on that morning.

52 players went out for our Tuesday sweep which went to Annacarthy , Eire Og clubman, Kevin Fox who showed that his hurling skills from his playing days have transferred to the golf course! Kevin credits his playing companion, Fr. Tony Ryan P.P. in Rearcross, with divine inspiration to guide him along to a fantastic score of 28 points for 11 holes. In second place was Bansha man Tom Cosgrove with a great score of 25 points, while multiple winner this winter, Kilfinnane man, Pat Sheehy, was just pipped into third in a countback.

Over the two days, we had 161 players in our weekend sweep. The overall best score went to Kilcommon man, Liam Farrell with a great total of 28 points. The very recent purchase of a new driver from Darragh in the pro-shop seems to have done the trick for this most popular of winners. The other big winner over the weekend was Bernard O Shaughnessy, who cleared all hurdles to take Saturdays best score.

Another frequent winner, Doon man, Michael P Ryan squeezed home in a countback from Norman Jones in category 1. Both players had the same score or 24 points. Our Category 2 winner, Limerick man Noel Hennessy had a great score of 25 points. Noel was taking his second win of the season, well deserved as he is a great supporter of our competitions and will be a prime candidate for the various club teams this year.

In Category 3, we welcome back former Captain, Larry Creamer back to the fairways and promptly to the winner's enclosure. This was the tightest finish of the four categories, with four players (Liam O Brien, Mark Jordan and Aidan Keating) all having the same score, but Larry was the victor in a countback by a hairs thickness.

Kerry man, Michael Fuller popped up again as a winner in Category 4. Having purchased a brand new set of irons in the pro-shop recently, Mike clawed back some of the expense  with a great win by 1 point from Hospital's William O'Connell.

Upcoming Fixtures:

Captains Drive In: Having been postponed last January due to bad weather, this great Club event will take place on St. Patricks Day at 12 noon. Keep an eye out for further notices, as the timesheet will be set up for members, a week in advance to put their name down. Best of luck to Daniel, Deirdre and Sean on the day.

Easter Bank Holiday 3 Person Open Team Event. We will be holding this popular competition on Monday 6th of April. The timesheet is open and the evenings will be longer when the clocks change.

We will have 18 holes open from Saturday 14th of March, which will see a return to our open singles on Tuesdays and Saturdays, (Our Summer Series will kick off in mid- April), Sundays will see a resumption of our club singles. Thanks to all our members who patiently adjusted to three ball groups for the last few weeks, the old format returns from Tuesday 10th March.

Club Teams: The list of fixtures, Managers and signup sheets are up on the notice board in the locker room for the past few weeks. If you are interested in trying out for any of the teams, just sign your details on the relevant team sheet and you will be contacted by the  team management.

As we approach the month of April, we would hope to have counting competitions set up as soon as possible together with the qualifying rounds of the Moloney Foursomes, Murray Fourball and the T F Ryan cup.

Clubhouse Update:

This week see the construction work take place in the kitchen. Apologies for the inconvenience, it will be completed in approximately 10 days, so the best of luck to O'Rawe Catering in this new venture. If any members wish to rent out single/triple lockers- get in touch with Eddie Fitzgerald or Darragh to book your spot. It is possible to keep your Trolly, golf bag and golf shoes in the triple lockers, so don’t delay as there will only be nine of these available.

22nd February 2026

In a week that continued the pattern of broken weather, we succeeded in holding all of our competitions this week. We have been planning for the bad weather so that our members can get out and play by setting up the timesheet in three balls so that we can revert to a scramble if the conditions are poor. It has been unfortunate that players have had to adapt to groups of three, but we urge our members to be patient as the alternative of not having golf is far worse. It is hoped to revert to our normal timesheet bookings from next week (two weeks in advance).

Results:

On Tuesday last we had a novel podium finish when father and son were first and second, however this time Askeaton man, Brian Kelly had to play second fiddle to his son Eamon in a close finish. This is a great sign of form from Eamon who plays in the All-Ireland Post Primary Golf Finals in April at Lucan Golf Course, representing The Abbey School, Tipperary Town. Brian I’m sure will not mind being the runner up on this occasion and when he gets used to his new driver he won in Darragh McCombs Draw a while back, there will be a chance to turn the tables on Eamon.

Our weekend Sweep was very competitive, with very little separating the top scores.

Ger Heelan from Kilfinane was Saturday's top scorer while Ballyneety dual member Niall McKeown was top scorer on Sunday. Both players shot 27 points for 11 holes. Ger is becoming a regular on the winner's circle and will be a force to reckon with in the months ahead. Our categories were also hotly contested with a couple of club officials taking the laurels. In category one , Vice-Captain, John Traynor shot a great round of one over par to demonstrate that he is playing well and hasn’t let his golf slip. In category two, Club Chairman, Morgan Mooney reminded everyone that as a former Major winner, he too is not letting his busy workload get in the way of his golf. Both men assure us that this is not the last we will see of them on the results pages this year! In category three, Aherlow's Frankie Leonard was victorious in probably the toughest group to win, Cappamore man, Mike Carberry came out on top of category four shooting a fine score of 26 points. All of these scores were doubled up for their Spring League teams so, a great few days work by these players.

Our Spring League concludes on Saturday 21st of March, with the top 6 teams battling it out the following day Sunday 22nd of March from 11.30 approximately. The highest scorers this weekend were resident chef at the club, Joe Kent and Vinny Herbert with 23 points for 9 holes. The majority of players are either completed or nearing completion of their rounds. It is crucial that all players complete all their rounds, as when the scores are totalled, there is normally very little in it. The individual category leaders of the qualifying stages are currently being occupied by Michael P Ryan (Cat 1), Sean Jackson (Cat 2), Mike McCarthy (Cat 3) and Paddy Mulcahy (Cat 4). While it is still possible for them to be overtaken, it will be a difficult task!

On April 6th, Easter Monday, we will be holding an Open Team of Three Scramble. The timesheet is now open for booking, this will be held over 18 holes and with the clocks changing the week before, there should be plenty of time slots for members to book in.

Clubhouse Improvements:

The initial stages of the expansion of our kitchen into the committee room have begun. Great credit to pavilion manager, Eddie Fitzgerald on his work so far this year, the recent work in the Men's Locker Room is proving very popular and a number of other improvements have been appreciated. We must also thank O'Rawe Catering and club staff for all the work they put in on a daily basis to keep the clubhouse running smooth.

He was closely followed by a group of three players on 21 points, with men's club PRO Gerry Kelly winning second place on a countback. Even though conditions were very cold, thirty-six members braved the elements and were delighted to get a game in. Many thanks to Greenkeeper Eddie Ryan and his staff for having the course in such great order, despite a prolonged spell of wet weather. Winter Sweep : Sat 14th February 1st Gerard Egan (7) 22 pts 2nd Gerry Kelly (6) 21 pts B6 Winter Scramble Sunday 15th February We have organised the timesheet into three balls for a few weeks to help with protecting the course. Last Sunday was the first occasion that we had to put this plan into place, where instead of singles, we had a three-person scramble to keep the traffic on the fairways. This worked out really well considering all the overnight rain. Much to the delight of our members, we opened on Sunday morning. While the morning started wet and showery, it brightened up to a lovely day. Thanks to all of the people who played and kept to the footpaths and fairways. This unique way of having golf available to members worked great. The three balls on the timesheet will remain for another few weeks and if necessary, we will play a scramble when similar wet conditions prevail. Twenty two teams went out in the scramble where the scoring was very tight. Finishing on top by a point was the combination of Kilfinane's Vinny Herbert and James O Doherty together with local Bansha man Paddy Crowe on a fine score of three under par for 11 holes. Close up in second place was the Grantstown, father and son combination of Sean and Thomas Crosse together with recent winner Tom O Donnell from Golden. Club Scramble (11 holes) Sunday 15th February: Result: Winners : Vinny Herbert, James O Doherty and Paddy Crowe 41 (04) 37 nett Runners Up : Thomas Crosse. Members will be informed of the dates in question, there will hopefully be minimal disruption hopefully. 8th February 2026 Men's Club Notes: On Bank Holiday Monday last, we held a very successful Three Person Team Scramble, where we had thirty seven teams with quite a few visitors, who were successful in taking some prizes home. Overall winners were the Kilfinane combination of Barry O'Shaughnessy, James O'Doherty and Paudie Leahy with a superb score of 49 points, nett. Having travelled all the way from Kinsale, Liz O'Neill, Orla Buckley and Cathy McGuinness, an all Kinsale GC won our Ladies team prize with a great score of 57 nett Even though we had some very wet weather this week, we still managed to play our competitions on Tuesday and Sunday, unfortunately we lost our Saturday sweep. On Tuesday, Tom O Donnell from Golden, had a great score of 30 points for twelve holes. This was one of the best performances of the year, Tom will be in great demand every Thursday from now on in the Seniors! He was followed in second by Kilfinanes Pat O Shaughnessy, who has a great record on Tuesdays this winter. In our Sunday sweep, the best score of the day went to Thomas Hanley from Ballylanders, with a great score of twenty-six points in category two for ten holes. Doon's Michael P Ryan reminded everyone that he is always a threat with his second win of the season in category one with an impressive one under par twenty-two points. Having had a very successful Spring League (his team may get him to the final yet!) Clare native James Collins turned his attention to the Winter Sweeps. With a very economical win in category three, James held off the opposition to win in a count-back from his playing companion Cork man, Jim Noonan. A popular success in category four for Holycross native Rody Dwan with a great score of 24 points completed the results. Monday 2nd February Bank Holiday Scramble (15 Holes) Results: 1st Place : Barry O Shaughnessy, James O Doherty, Paudie Leahy (3) 49 nett 2nd Place : Paddy Mulcahy, John Joe Mulcahy Castletroy GC, Michael Roache Castletroy GC, (7) 50 nett 3rd Place : Sean Jackson, Noel Hennessey, Michael H McGrath (4) 51nett B9 Ladies Team Winners : Liz O Neill Kinsale GC, Orla Buckley Kinsale GC, Cathy McGuinness Kinsale GC (2) 57 nett Mixed Team Winners : Tommy Landers, Tom Moloney, Siobhan Landers (6) 54 nett Winter Sweep Tuesday 3rd February 2026 (12 Hole) 1st Place : Tom O Donnell (16) 30pts 2nd Place : Pat O Shaughnessy (12) 28pts Winter Sweep Sunday February 8th 2026 (10 Holes) Category 1: Michael P Ryan (01) 22pts Category 2: Thomas Hanley (06) 26 Category 3: James Collins (10) 22pts Category 4 : Rody Dwan (14) 24pts Spring League: We are nearly halfway through our five round Spring league, with a small number of players fully completed. Pallasgreens, Paddy Mulcahy is the leading scorer so far with 104pts (check “Best of Series” on master score board to see the standings). The leading team at the moment would appear to be “Team N” compromising of Sean Cummins, Andrew Grant, Eric O'Connor, Billy O'Reilly, Pat Sheehy and Ignatius Walsh. The top six teams will play off in a final in March, date to be confirmed, subject to weather delays. Senior Matchplay We have just finalised our Senior Matchplay competition for 2026, it can be viewed on Master Score Board under “Knock Out Draws”. We had a great response to this with 20 players entering. Best of luck to all and hopefully it will run smoothly. All results will be posted on Master Scoreboard. Upcoming Fixtures: We continue with our usual Tuesday sweeps and Saturday/Sunday sweeps. Don’t forget to join the Seniors on Thursdays by just turning up at 10.30, where you will be welcomed and set up with a team for an enjoyable few hours. 1st February 2026 Men's Club Notes: In the month of February, we will continue with the Winter Sweeps and Spring League as usual. The time lost due to the inclement weather will see the final of the Spring League delayed, we will give adequate notice of this on the usual platforms. With the evenings beginning to lengthen, members can now get out in the evenings for practice. The clocks change on Sunday March 29th,so this usually signals a return to eighteen hole competitions. Senior Match-play Entry: Sunday next, 8th February is the deadline for entering this year's competition. We would like to have 16 players in this competition, kindly sponsored by Joe McGrath. With good prizes and the guarantee of competitive matches, why not get involved and enjoy the competitive element together with social element in the bar afterwards. Course Information: Due to the continued heavy traffic on the course, there may some changes to the timesheet in the coming weeks. In an attempt to keep players on the drier fairways, it will be possible to do so if all groups go out in three balls, so that when the weather is particularly wet, it will be possible to play scrambles which tend to be down the fairways, instead of singles. This will hopefully will not happen too often, but we need to have a plan in place to protect the course which will not recover until late April/early May. This inconvenience will be worth it when we have the course at it's best as early as possible. Results: Due to a very wet number of days, we lost a few competition days. However, much to the delight of the Senior men, Thursdays Scramble went ahead with ten holes in play. We were able to get fifteen holes open at the weekend, so all were happy. Locker Room Upgrades We have seen great improvement in the facilities recently, with the new carpets in the locker rooms and the beautiful mural of Tipperary Golf Club in the restaurant. Together with the slideshow in the foyer and the great ongoing work on the club website, it is clear that the club is continuing to evolve and update its facilities. Well done to all involved in these improvements. 25th January 2026 Tipperary Golf Club celebrates it's 130 Year Anniversary: Our Captain Daniel Connery & Lady Captain Deirdre Hayes outlined that the first lady to hit a golf ball, up in the hills of Tipperary was Mrs Moore, from Mooresfort in Lattin, and that happened just before Christmas in 1895.   The 25th January 1896, the record show's Tipperary Golf Club was officially launched. Captain TE Willington was the first to captain the club & they golfed in the Hills of Tipperary until around 1916, when it moved to Scallagheen, then by mid 1920's moved to Garranacanty, and into Carrog for a while, moved into Rathanny into 1939 as a 9-hole course.  In 1993 the club moved from being 9 holes to 18 holes, and the journey has just grown from there.  We have had a number of great golfers to hail from the club, including none other than the great Arthur Pearse & Pat Murray, Marian Riordan & Sarah Crowe, as well as Donnacha Cleary to reach Ireland golfer status, just to mention a few.  Thanks to all of our members and locals, we're still going strong. Men's Club Notes:  We have just endured a week of very wet weather which caused us to lose out on a whole week of fixtures. Most notably, our annual Captains Drive In (scheduled for Sunday 25th January) was deferred until a later date. We will advertise well in advance of the new date. With the immediate forecast looking unsettled, we hope for an easing in the rainfall so that the course can drain successfully without being compounded by further rain. Men's Spring League: Following a high participation in the first week of the competition, the teams are all still competitive. As it is being played over five rounds of nine holes, any teams that didn’t have the greatest of starts can still make the final six qualifiers as all teams can falter along the way. Don’t forget that there is an individual prize for each category during the qualifying rounds. The final will be played on Sunday 1st of March (weather permitting) where qualifying scores won’t carry over. Winter Sweeps: We hopefully will be able to continue with our usual competitions this week, the scores recently have been very high, with players shooting scores very close to level par in top two categories. Players are deducted shots for various wins and the perseverance of some players has paid off, when they continued in a good vein of form. Upcoming events: Our Open team event on St. Brigids bank holiday Monday, February 2nd is almost fully booked up. There is still some availability for afternoon slots. This champagne scramble with two scores to count proved very popular on New Years Day, so hopefully we get a good day for it. 18th January 2026 Upcoming TGC Fixtures Captains Drive In. Always an enjoyable day and a big occasion for our Captains Daniel, Deirdre and Sean. Our sweeps continue as normal with the Senior men having their day on Thursday mornings. If you are over 59 and would like to join in the Seniors on Thursdays, just show up before 10.30 and you will be assigned to a team and a great few hours on the golf course and in the clubhouse afterwards. Course Updates: Eddie and his team have just completed the upgrading of the greenside bunker on the eighteenth last week. This adds to the challenge of the hole as well as creating a greater contour on the green. The course will hopefully receive a current rating this year, which will reflect all the improvements we have seen in recent times. Work on bunkers and tee boxes have really enhanced the course and should be seen as significant when the rating is completed.
