Played in fantastic weather, and as a stroke event off the blue tees, this was a tough test for members a week before the Captain's Prize. Monard resident Sean Jackson came back into form at the right time to secure the best score of the day, but only just! Local man, Martin Murphy had the same fine score but lost out on a countback over the last three holes. Surely this form will carry through over the next few weeks and there will be interest in both of these players in the traditional Auction in the clubhouse on Friday 3rd July for the last 69 players left in the competition the following day. Gerry Malone had a fine score to take third place while local man Mikey O'Halloran took his second gross prize of the week in another tight finish.

Hopefully we will also be able to get work done on the irrigation of all the tee boxes in time. Members will have noticed the presence of Golf Ireland Officials at the club in recent weeks. We were due for a 'course rating' inspection, as is standard for all golf courses. All the data was collected by these officials with regard to any physical changes on the course and the statistical data regarding scoring on each hole in competitions, this will all be compiled by the PGA headquarters and the results of that will be relayed to the club in due course. Club Teams:

Our Pierce Purcell team traveled to West Waterford Golf Club on Saturday last 23rd of May, looking to advance to the fourth round of the competition. Managers Dan McKenna and Pat Creamer were forced into a lot of changes again due to player unavailability. Things were very tight in the contest with the result in the balance right to the end. The final result was a three and one loss for Tipperary unfortunately but with a number of players playing for the club for the first time, it can only benefit the club in the years to come.

Well done to all involved, given the effort put in by Dan and Pat this year, we would hope that more players would put their names forward for selection to represent their club next year. Team/Panel, Simon Earlie/Eddie Madden, Patrick Kennedy/Vinny Herbert, Bill Mernagh/ Michael Cleary, Gerard Ryan/Noel Hennessy and Sean Bourke/ John O'Donavan.

Mackey Cup, Sunday 24th May

Played in beautiful sunshine, 98 players went out to try and win this prestigious prize. Scoring was very tight with Golden's Tom O'Donnell just holding out in a countback from club vice captain John Traynor. In third with an excellent three over par was Tipperary town man Seamus O'Halloran. This was just eclipsed by Paddy Kennedy who was making a welcome return to these shores from his exploits cross channel in the football fields. Kindly sponsored by Cavanagh Brothers Kitchens and Bedrooms, this was the last club singles before next week's fundraising classic.

Summer Series, Round 7, Tuesday 12th May, Sponsored by O Connor Refrigeration

The 7th round of the popular Summer Series took place on Friday and Saturday last in nice weather, with the temperatures down a little for this time of year.

We had a fine turnout of 91 players including 6 visitors. Scoring was excellent, with all categories being won with great scores. Top score of the day was Kilfinane's Pat Sheehy with 46 points, which was reinforced by a back nine of 26 points. Sean Jackson of Monard was also in brilliant form with a round of 44 points that was without a blemish. Both men will have secured their spot in the grand finale at this early stage. Making waves in Category One, was Limerick City man, James O'Brien who also was a member of the successful Jimmy Bruen team that won on the previous Sunday. After a spell of injuries and absence from the fairways, it was great to see Limerick's Charlie McCarthy back in the winning enclosure again to also surely book his spot in the final. Our winning visitor travelled from county Cork and had a productive day, as Eamon McCarthy can take home the prize of a box of PROV1s on his next visit to the club.

Cat 1 James O'Brien (7) 40 Pts

Cat 2 Sean Jackson (15) 44 Pts

Cat 3 Pat Sheehy (17) 46 Pts

Cat 4 Charlie McCarthy (23) 41 pts

Best Visitor: Eamon McCarthy (15) 35 Pts (Charleville Golf Club)

Munster Seniors Open Thursday 14th May

We hosted the first of our four Senior's Opens last Thursday where we had a great turn out of 117 players including 77 visitors. The weather was a little damp but brightened up as the day went on. There was some very good scoring with the top score of the day going to Michael Phelan of West Waterford GC who had an excellent 44pts. Tipperary GC member Ger Dineen from county Kerry, was the best in the second division with a tidy 40 points to narrowly defeat former Tipperary resident, Noel McMahon by the narrowest of margins. Local man, Joe Fitzgerald again was in the frame in the top division, while another Tipperary town man, Thomas Ellard, shot another fine score to make the frame on a successful season so far this year. Our next Seniors Open takes place on Thursday 16th of July.

We return to our normal club Seniors next Thursday at 9.30 where all are welcome.

Summer Series Fri 15th/Sat 16th May (Round 8)

Over the course of the two days, we had 104 players including 13 visitors playing in good weather conditions even though temperatures remain lower than normal for this time of year. Scoring was very competitive with the course now in terrific condition with the greens running fast and the fairways and rough all showing a lovely coat of grass cover. The score of the weekend was that of regular visitor, Richard Crean of Fermoy GC. Shooting a brilliant 2 under par round on Friday, it was both the winning gross and visitors prize, as we are giving a box of PROV1s to our best visitor, the choice was easy. Top division honours went to local man Seamus O'Halloran with a fine round of one over par, while Mikey O'Halloran took the gross with a fine level par round. After a few close calls, Ballylanders' man, Colm Noonan came out the right side of a countback to claim the second division, while Cappamore's Ignatius Walsh took the 3rd division in style, with Bansha's Tom Cosgrove proving the strongest in the fourth division. Our quarterly competition of three best scores concluded at the weekend with Philip Ryan, Colm Noonan, Andrew Weller and Ray Kennedy claiming the prizes which will be presented on Friday 26th of June @8pm. On Sunday we held our Club Singles off white tees, scoring was tight with the weather conditions a little wet and again colder than normal for this time of year. Our winner was a busy man over the weekend, looking after two of our club teams and still finding time to play golf on his own right. Well done to local businessman and generous sponsor Liam Murphy on a fine score of two over par to lead the field home by a stroke. Annacarthy's Michael McGrath filled the second spot in a countback from Tipperary's Edward Lowry who has been playing well of late. Next week, we have the prestigious Mackey Cup being played off the blue tees and it is a stroke event.
