Our Open week runs right through until Friday with a variety of team and singles competitions on offer. The weather for the week is warm-hot-dry and the course is playing beautifully so get your golfing friends out for a game. When you are in the Clubhouse check out the new Lotto sign which was sponsored by Liam Duffy. No, you are not mistaken, it says €11,000. Tickets cost only €2 or 3 tickets for €5.

Given firm fairways and some blue skies our scoring just went off the scale. Last Tuesday, with 40 pts, Steven Murray & Donal Bradshaw could be forgiven if they thought there was a chance of winning. Then Colm Murphy teed off. On a card peppered with pars Colm out-shone everyone, bringing in an unbeatable 45 pts. Just shows that his hurling son, that recent goalscorer Barry Murphy, didn’t lick it off the grass.

Our weekend Scratch Cups brought out over 180 golfers despite the threat of thundershowers dotted around the country. The greens were rolling beautifully but with stroke-play off the blue markers it was surely going to be more difficult to bring in a good score … or so you would think. The competition was very close in each division with only a shot or two being the difference between immortality and if only I had. This year the gods elect are Michael P Ryan 72 (Senior), Richie Ryan 75 (Junior), Peter Hogan 81 (Intermediate) and John Joe Mulcahy 86 (Minor). Congratulations.

Mental Note – could someone please ask Eddie if he can start making those pin positions just a little bit harder 🙂

Junior Golf: Our Junior Golf schedule begins on Monday, June 11, at 9 am. The first few weeks are aimed at those second level students not caught up in the exams. How many of you wish that you had the opportunity to start playing at an earlier age? Don’t give the next generation the same excuse. Pass on the bug. If you have any sons/daughters, grandchildren, nieces/nephews or friends that might be interested then please contact the Office for details on our Junior setup.

As well as helping to develop coordination and social skills, golf can provide a wealth of benefits for us all.

  • A Game For Life – It doesn’t matter if you are 8, 88 or just don’t care to mention, this is a game for all ages.
  • Anyone Can Play – You don’t have to be lean, strong or fast to play golf.
  • Spend Time Outdoors – A day out in the fresh air has to be good for you.
  • Important Life Lessons – Just like life, golf has both highs and lows. Learning to deal with them on the course helps to develop a great life skill.
  • Family Time – A great way for the family to spend some quality time together.
  • FUN, FUN, FUN – When the youngsters come home saying they got into trouble on the 4th, rest assured, it was probably only the bunker or the trees.
