What a fantastic holiday weekend for golf. It was great to see the course and Clubhouse busy over the whole weekend. With play as it lies in the rough, golf suddenly got that much more difficult. No so for the straight hitting Michael Keaty who won our Open Singles on Saturday with 38pts, pipping the only slightly longer Trevor Flynn by one point. Sunday’s Coman Cup Qualifier was again a hot competition. Dennis Keating led home the field with 39 pts on a countback against Francis Fitzgerald with the same score. During the week Phillip Ryan won our Tuesday Singles with 38 pts beating Joe Franklin into second on a countback. The first Seniors Open of the year saw 3 home men top their divisions, PJ Leahy 38pts, Eddie Fitzgerald 40 pts and Padraig O’Cellaigh 35 pts. Correction – winners of our bank holiday Team of 3 are Nicky Cummins, Brendan Ryan & Donnacha Horan on 84 pts.
Not such a great weekend for us on the team front. Our JB Carr team lost away to a very strong Templemore side. Our Junior Foursomes also came out second best against an excellent Mitchelstown team but fought hard all the way.
Have you played the 6th recently? A certain beaver has been busy this weekend munching on the lower limbs of those ball-hungry conifers along the left side. The conifers are still in play but the new setup allows some type of recovery shot when you end up at the bottom of one. As well as making the hole play better it also brightens and tidies the place quite a bit. Well done to our Vice-Captain Alan Meskell, tough work but you’ve done a great job.
You are standing on the 7th tee (blue), you have something in the region of 175 yards, uphill and into the wind. What club would you play? I might think about pulling the big dog but for shot of the weekend it was a sweetly struck 6 iron bouncing once and straight into the hole for an ace. Given recent form who would you guess? Stand up Patrick Ryan, first of the year, well done. I’m still waiting for my drink at the bar.
Mixed Foursomes – Sponsor Aileen & Connor Carroll: The deadline has passed but if you are quick you might still get your name into the draw. See notice board in the bar.
Moloney Foursomes : Final entry end date is Sunday May 13th. Please add your names to the sheet on the Men’s notice board.
Pierce Purcell: First practice on Wednesday evening from 5:45pm. Manager Eddie Fitzgerald.
Our Jimmy Bruen team, managed by Mike O’Brien, play in Dundrum next Saturday, final practice on Thursday @ 5:30. We have been oh so close in the last couple of years, this year I feel that our luck is going to change. Bring it home boys.
